Botanical Illustration by Waiwai Hove

Growing up in the lush greenery of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the 80s, Waiwai developed a love for nature and plants in particular, nurtured by a keen gardener mother. Together with her older brother, she would explore their naturalistic surroundings and neighbourhood, spending many hours catching insects and making ornaments and arrangements out of wild flowers - at a time when children could roam unhindered. She also discovered that drawing came naturally to her and soon plants often became her subjects.

As an adult Waiwai managed to spend several years learning the basics of botanical illustration herself through reference books while pursuing a career as a flight attendant in Hong Kong. After moving to Singapore with her family, she completed a 2 year distance learning diploma course provided by the UK-based Society of Botanical Artists. She not only graduated with a distinction but also received the Award of Excellence for obtaining the highest marks in the history of the course.

Waiwai is currently working on a major commission project with the Singapore Botanic Gardens, painting the heritage trees of the gardens.

Waiwai works in both watercolour and graphite mediums. She has a special passion for illustrating South East Asian flora as they are subjects closest to her environment and heart.

Waiwai accepts commissions. If interested, please send your enquiries to waiwai.hove@gmail,com
